Review of 'Crushing' by Elena Dillon

Crushing

As a pampered and adored daughter of a wealthy Southern family Rory's life was seemingly perfect until her troubled childhood crush moves back in across the street forcing her to choose between him and the life that has been chosen for her. As if that isn't enough, her quiet island town has turned dangerous. A good friend has gone missing, lending truth to the rumors of a serial kidnapper. In her quest to help she becomes a target and will have to make choices about love, friendship and the inevitable sacrifice that they both require.

**My thoughts**

Wow. This book, which would also appeal to a YA audience, kept me spellbound for two hours as I devoured it. Rory is a likeable character who is torn between two gorgeous young men. There is the ever-faithful best friend Dom, who would be the perfect choice. Then, there is Gage, her first love/crush, who is the sexy bad boy we love to dream about. She has a hard time making a solid decision throughout the book. You are almost torn with her, trying to decide which one would be the better choice. The rational side of me is concerned about Gage's past, yet intrigued by his protective nature. That same rational side has a soft spot for the loyal best male friend, yet is annoyed by his cocky assumption that they are perfect for each other. Sometimes, the heart just doesn't work the way that the head thinks it should.

Add a kidnapper in the mix, along with crazy attacks and mysterious encounters, and you have plenty of suspense and action. Everyone becomes a suspect at one point or another as you read through the book. You may be surprised when the culprit is revealed in the end.

I also found myself kind of crushing on her older twin brothers. Even though Rory's family is overprotective, they are endearing at the same time.

And of course, I cannot forget Bailee! I guarantee you will also fall in love with her.

The only thing that I felt was a little off was how some longer periods of time could go by without mention of the missing girl. I almost wanted to hear about the daily updates that you know would be all over the news. I would also hope that the police would be better at piecing together all of the events, but that is not always the case.

This is a great choice for a suspenseful, romantic summer read to get your heart pumping a little bit faster.

Elena lives and writes in a suburb North of Los Angeles. She has never lived anywhere besides California which is probably a good thing since she hates being cold and is terrified to drive in the snow. She loves being a wife and a mother to her two kids and three dogs, although really the bulldog is the fourth child who has never matured beyond the toddler stage.

A self proclaimed nerd, she has been writing since she was a child. She has only recently, however, come out of the closet about this to her family and friends. They now understand better, but not completely, why she talks about characters in stories as if they are real people.
